Igniting Possibilities: Inspiring Future Builders at New Heights Middle School
On November 20th, the Hoopaugh Grading Company (HGC) team had the privilege of visiting New Heights Middle School, where we engaged over 400 students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. This hands-on experience was designed to introduce students to the exciting world of construction career education, spark their curiosity about career possibilities, and highlight the teamwork, innovation, and skills that drive our industry.
With ten team members from HGC and two incredible partners from Carolina Cat, we created an unforgettable day for the students. Each grade rotated through interactive stations that showcased different aspects of the construction industry.
Here’s a glimpse into the stations and what the students experienced:construction career education
Carolina Cat Simulator Truck
Students climbed aboard the high-tech simulator trailer to experience what it’s like to operate heavy machinery. The excitement and focus they showed were remarkable!
Articulated Truck
Our articulated truck was a big hit, serving as a fun backdrop while giving students a closer look at the larger than life equipment we use daily.
Utilities Pipe
Students learned about the critical role of utilities in construction projects, emphasizing planning and precision. Teams worked together and used their teamwork skills to assemble a series of pipes and connectors into a specific design.
Communication Cornhole
In two groups, students discovered the importance of teamwork and effective communication, playing cornhole blindfolded to reinforce how these skills translate to the worksite.
Machine Engine
A peek under the hood showed students the mechanics of construction equipment and the innovation behind the machines.
PPE Race
A favorite for many, this activity turned safety into a fun competition, where students raced to gear up in personal protective equipment (PPE).
HGC Presentation
Our team shared stories, insights, and a glimpse into the rewarding careers available in the construction industry.
Construction Career Education
While the event was designed to teach, we walked away with new insights of our own. Interacting with these bright young minds reminded us of the importance of fostering curiosity and enthusiasm for our work. Their questions, energy, and creative problem-solving gave us a fresh perspective on the future of our industry.
“It’s inspiring to see the next generation so eager to learn about construction. Their excitement and curiosity remind us why we love what we do. Events like this show the potential in the future workforce, and it’s up to us to keep it going.” – Trey Tarlton, Director of Construction at HGC
This day wasn’t just about machines and activities – it was about planting seeds of possibility. Many students had never considered a career in construction or understood how their skills in math, problem solving, or communication could be applied to real-world projects.
An Industry Partnership in Action
Our partnership with Carolina Cat added tremendous value to the event. Their simulator truck and expertise brought an extra level of excitement and education to the day. Collaborating with organizations that share our passion for outreach strengthens our mission to inspire the next generation.
“Watching students light up as they experienced the simulator or completed the PPE race was incredible. We’re so grateful to HGC for bringing this opportunity to our school and showing students what’s possible in construction.” – Karen Brock, Career Specialist at New Heights Middle School.
Thank You to Everyone Who Made It Possible
We’re incredibly grateful to New Heights Middle School for welcoming us, the students for their enthusiasm, and our own team for their dedication. Together, we built an experience that showcased not only the exciting opportunities in construction but also the values of teamwork, safety, and innovation that guide our work every day.
At HGC, we believe in investing in the future – not just through the projects we build, but by inspiring the people who will shape what comes next. Here’s to building brighter futures, one student at a time!
