Behind the Machines: Celebrating the Skilled Trades That Power Hoopaugh Grading Company

At Hoopaugh Grading Company (HGC), we believe the heartbeat of every successful project isn’t just the machinery—it’s the people behind it. The skilled trades in construction, the professionals who operate our equipment, shape the land, and build the foundation for progress are more than teammates; they’re the backbone of our business. Today, we’re pulling back the curtain to celebrate our people and spotlight some of the most impactful career opportunities in construction.

The Power of People in Construction

The construction industry is evolving rapidly, with advancements in technology and growing demand for infrastructure reshaping how work gets done. But despite all the innovation, one thing remains constant: the critical need for people who are passionate about the construction industry.

At HGC, we’re proud to employ some of the most talented individuals in the industry—people who bring grit, precision, and pride to their craft every single day. From equipment operators and project managers to field engineers and mechanics, our team brings experience, dedication, and heart to every job site.

Meet a Few of the HGC Difference-Makers

Every member of the HGC team plays a vital role in our mission to be the best workplace for our team, delivering top-notch results for our partners, clients, and community through living out our core values. Let’s meet some of our teammates who make it all possible:

• John - Field Coach:

After more than a decade in the seat as an expert excavator operator, John now plays a crucial role in developing the next wave of HGC talent. As a field coach, he works directly with new team members – many of whom are stepping into heavy equipment for the first time – helping them build foundational skills and real confidence in the field. With his calm approach, technical background, and deep respect for the craft, John sets the tone for what it means to grow and lead from the ground up.

• Andrea – Training and Curriculum Specialist:

Andrea oversees all things training and development at HGC. With the goal of helping every teammate thrive and grow, her responsibilities include everything from leading our Dig-In high school internship and college internship programs, developing impactful and strategic training opportunities, and implementing our internal career path progressions.

• Pedro – Utility Superintendent:

Pedro is a crew leader in HGC’s utility division, overseeing the installation and maintenance of essential infrastructure such as water, sewer, and storm systems. With a commitment to safety and a growth mindset, he ensures that every project not only meets regulatory standards and is completed efficiently, but that his team is set up for success. Pedro’s leadership and expertise are instrumental in delivering reliable utility solutions that support the foundation of our communities.

• Salma – GPS Dozer Operator:

Salma is a vital part of HGC’s precision sitework team, utilizing advanced GPS technology to ensure every cut, fill, and slope is executed with pinpoint accuracy. Her expertise in machine control systems and topographical data translates into smoother operations, reduced material waste, and faster project timelines. Salma’s attention to detail and technical proficiency are key to delivering the high-quality results HGC is known for.

• Ashton – GPS Dozer Operator:

Ashton’s journey at HGC is a standout example of where hard work and curiosity can take you. After starting as a Dig-In intern last summer, he quickly proved himself through grit, focus, and a willingness to learn. Today, he operates a GPS dozer with confidence, helping execute complex grading work with precision. Ashton continues to grow into a leader on site – showing up early, asking insightful questions, and setting the tone for what’s possible when you take pride in your work.

• Katie – Director of Team Development:

Katie shapes HGC’s culture by building an inclusive, supportive workplace where HGC teammates can grow and thrive. She manages the Team Development Group, which includes recruiting, hiring, onboarding, safety, marketing, communications, and professional development to build talent from within. Through her focus on well-being, diversity, and team-building, she helps make HGC a place where people feel valued and inspired every day.

Pave Your Path: Real Careers, Real Impact at HGC

At Hoopaugh Grading Company, careers aren’t just made—they’re intentionally designed. We don’t offer cookie-cutter jobs or one-size-fits-all roles. Instead, we create opportunities in the skilled trades for people who want to learn, lead, and empower the team around them.

Whether you’re brand new to construction or ready to level up your skills, there’s a place for you here. These are just a few of the career paths as skilled trades in construction where HGC team members are thriving and growing:

  • Heavy Equipment Operator
You’re not just moving dirt—you’re shaping the future. Our operators are masters behind the controls of dozers, loaders, and excavators, bringing precision and muscle to some of Charlotte and the Carolina’s largest site prep projects. We’ll train you to read the land, use GPS technology, and grow your confidence in the seat.

  • Utility Laborer
This is where many of our leaders got their start. As a laborer, you’re on the front lines—learning the ropes, supporting the crew, and building a solid foundation for your career (literally and figuratively). We believe in developing and promoting from within, and many who start here go on to run crews and entire divisions.

  • Survey Crew
Armed with cutting-edge GPS and high-tech equipment, our survey teams guide every inch of our work from start to finish with pinpoint accuracy. This role is a perfect blend of technology, fieldwork, and problem-solving—and it’s essential to everything we do.

  • Shop & Field Mechanic
Without our team of skilled mechanics, the job stops. These experts keep our fleet of machines running in top form—whether it’s early morning maintenance in the shop or a critical fix in the field. If you’re someone who thrives on troubleshooting and takes pride in getting the job done right, you’ll be a perfect fit here.

  • Project Manager
Project Managers lead the charge—coordinating crews, managing budgets, keeping timelines on track, and maintaining strong client relationships. It’s a role that requires organization, communication, and a sharp eye for quality.

  • Superintendent
Our superintendents are our boots-on-the-ground leaders who bring our culture and vision to life. Not only do they oversee daily operations, ensure safety standards, and keep teams aligned in the field, they help everyone feel connected to something bigger. Their attitude and leadership set the tone for the entire project.

  • Internships
Curious about construction but not sure where to begin? Our intern programs are the perfect place to start. From hands-on field experience to construction management tracks, we offer two unique intern pathways designed to give you a real look at what it’s like to build a career at HGC.

At HGC, we offer more than a paycheck—we offer a path forward for skilled trades in construction. With on-the-job training, real career growth, and a team that has your back, there’s no limit to where your work can take you.
