Women in Construction: Breaking Barriers & Busting Myths
The construction industry is evolving, and women are playing a bigger role than ever before. Yet, despite their contributions, outdated misconceptions persist about their place in the field. The truth? Women are building, leading, and shaping the future of construction—and the numbers prove it.
The Growing Presence of Women in Construction
Women currently make up 10.9% of the construction workforce in the U.S., according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). While that’s a significant increase from previous decades, there’s still room for growth.
- Women in trade roles: Only 4% of construction laborers are women, but the demand for skilled workers is higher than ever.
- Women in leadership: 16% of construction firm leaders are female, proving that women are breaking through the glass ceiling.
- Higher pay equity: Construction has one of the smallest gender pay gaps in any industry, with women earning 99.1% of what men make on average.
As we celebrate Women in Construction Week 2025 through March, we couldn’t think of a better time to bust the biggest myths about women in the industry and highlight the real opportunities available.
Myth #1: Women in Construction Can’t Handle the Physical Demands of Construction
Fact: Strength isn’t the most important factor in construction—technique, skill, and adaptability matter more. With advancements in machinery, modern construction relies more on technology than brute force.
Many of today’s top tradeswomen operate heavy machinery, work in specialized trades, and lead teams in physically demanding environments. Women are electricians, carpenters, welders, and equipment operators—roles that require precision and problem-solving, not just muscle.
Myth #2: Women Can’t Operate Heavy Equipment
Fact: Women can—and do—operate heavy machinery with skill and expertise. In fact, many female operators at HGC have climbed the ranks quickly.
One of our team members progressed from a Roller Operator to a Dozer Operator within two years. Our recruiter, Jessica Rodriguez, shared on the Give Us The Dirt Podcast that many new female hires become proficient in running dozers and excavators in just three to four months.
With the right training and mentorship, women are excelling in roles traditionally dominated by men.
Myth #3: Women Don’t Receive Equal Pay in Construction
Fact: Construction is one of the few industries where women earn nearly as much as men.
- In the U.S., the average woman earns 81.1 cents for every dollar a man makes.
- In construction, women earn 99.1 cents for every dollar a man makes.
Because pay in construction is often based on skill level and certifications rather than corporate negotiations, the gender pay gap is much smaller than in office-based industries.
Myth #4: Women Aren’t Seen as Leaders in Construction
Fact: Women are leading construction firms, managing projects, and mentoring the next generation.
At HGC, we have strong female leaders across our company, including:
- Sharon Williams, Director of Finance & Administration
- Katie Page, Director of Team Development
- Jessica Rodriguez, Senior Recruiter
- Andrea Ribelin, Training & Curriculum Specialist
Women are project managers, engineers, site supervisors, and business owners—proving that leadership in construction isn’t about gender, but expertise, decision-making, and teamwork.
Myth #5: There Are No Career Opportunities for Women in Construction
Fact: The construction industry has one of the fastest-growing job markets with high-paying, stable careers.
By 2027, the U.S. will need to fill 500,000 additional construction jobs. Women looking for long-term career growth and financial security can find opportunities in:
- Skilled Trades (Electricians, Welders, Carpenters)
- Project Management & Engineering
- Safety & Compliance
- Heavy Equipment Operation
With an increasing demand for workers, women in construction are more essential than ever.
