Construction Internship Program: Shaping the Next Generation of Industry Leaders
The Give Us the Dirt podcast is back with an episode that goes behind the scenes of HGC’s robust construction internship program. Host Brandon Lindsey welcomed two guests with unique perspectives – Andrea Ribelin, the Training & Curriculum Specialist at HGC who oversees the internship program, and Jack Noll, a standout summer intern who is currently studying Construction Management at Georgia Southern University.
Throughout the episode, Andrea and Jack dive into the ins and outs of HGC’s construction internship program, which is open to both high school students and college students. They discuss what it takes to build an internship program from the ground up and how to create a solid intersection between academics and real-world, hands-on experience.
Shifting the Mindset from "Free Labor" to "Earn as You Learn"
One of the key topics explored in the episode is the importance of shifting the mindset around internships. Too often, internships are viewed as a way for companies to get “free labor.” However, Andrea and the team at HGC have worked hard to reframe the internship experience as an “earn as you learn” opportunity that benefits both the student and the company.
“Our goal is to provide interns with diverse experiences.” Andrea explains. “We want them to be actively involved in meaningful projects, learn from seasoned mentors, and come away with tangible skills that will serve them well in their future careers.”
Jack, who spent his summer interning at HGC, can attest to the value of this approach. “From surveying and mass grading to working in the office and on operations, I was able to really dive into the different aspects of the construction industry,” he says. “The hands-on learning has been incredibly valuable, and I’ve gained so much more than I ever could have in a classroom setting.”
The Power of Mentorship and Communication
Another key element of HGC’s construction internship program is the emphasis on mentorship and communication. Each intern is paired with an experienced HGC team member who serves as their guide and sounding board throughout the internship.
“The mentorship aspect has been so impactful,” Jack notes. “My mentor has really taken the time to explain things, answer my questions, and help me navigate different challenges. It’s been invaluable to have that one-on-one support.”
Andrea agrees, noting that clear communication and coordination between the interns, mentors, and broader HGC team is essential. “We’ve found that setting regular check-ins, providing constructive feedback, and fostering an open dialogue helps ensure everyone is on the same page and getting the most out of the experience.”
Shaping the Future of Construction
Ultimately, the “Learn As You Earn: Internships at HGC” episode of the Give Us the Dirt podcast highlights the crucial role that internships play in shaping the future of the construction industry. By providing students with hands-on experience, valuable mentorship, and a holistic understanding of the field, HGC is investing in the next generation of construction leaders.
“Our interns don’t just learn the technical skills; they also develop essential soft skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and communication,” Andrea says. “These are the kinds of qualities that will serve them well, no matter what path they choose to pursue in construction.”
For Jack, the HGC internship has been a transformative experience that has solidified his passion for the industry. “I’ve gained so much confidence and a deeper understanding of all the different facets of construction,” he reflects. “I’m excited to take all I have learned back to the classroom and continue exploring ways to grow and contribute to this industry.”
